Icemageddon 2013

Ever since we moved to TX we heard legends of ice storms past- specifically the one that happened the winter before we moved during the week of the Super Bowl and the WHOLE CITY was shut down and stores ran out of food!  We thought that it was just Texans being wimps about cold weather.  We still think that Texans are wimps about cold weather, but we believe the ice storm stories.

We could not believe the ice!  It coated everything. Parking lots and streets were covered in INCHES of ice- like an ice rink. It was hard to walk or drive anywhere.  School was cancelled, no mail was delivered, and DMP got to work from home.  We had so much fun hunkering down and staying in as a family. The girls had to be forced to come in occasionally to warm up after playing outside!
We were most surprised that the snow dog was delighted to be in her native element (see? she is camouflaged!)   We shouldn't have been since she loves to chew on ice cubes, and the whole back yard was full of frozen sticks, chunks of ice and frozen chew toys!
See? everything was coated in ice!

It was Bear's first real experience with anything like snow. I had just explained snowmen to him a couple days before, so his first question when he heard it snowed was "Can we make a snowman?!?"  Sorry kid- this "snow" is more like ice crystals- crunchy and coooolld. He still managed to have some fun!
DMP was just glad he didn't have to try and scrape the 1/2 in. of ice that completely coated his car!

Here is a video of the girls playing with their homemade sleds in the ice:
