Our Little Friends

For the first year, we were lucky enough to have barn swallows build their nest in our car port. They've pretty much built nests in every one but ours. Most people wouldn't see this as "lucky" (the poo is kinda gross) but while we've often visited the other nests nearby, we missed out on the fun (and educational) experience of witnessing the whole thing from start to finish. EJ especially enjoyed it and called them "Our Little Friends"

It was great to see the Mom and Dad building their nest. They worked hard for a while. When it was finished, they spent a day just flying around and doing tricks- probably because they were happy to be done! Then we noticed that the Momma bird wouldn't leave the nest for a while.

Then the ugly little things hatched. It was funny to see their little heads peeking up over the side and get excited when the Momma bird came by. It was also funny getting semi-divebombed any time you went to get into the car. One day DMP stood and watched them divebomb him- they would get really close to his face before veering off!

Finally our little friends turned into chubby, big friends who didn't really fit in the nest anymore. On Friday, when I was on my way to work I noticed a bunch of Barn Swallows flying around and no babies in the nest. Now we can look forward to next year!
